Penguin Awareness Day

Показать описание
Penguins: they’re some of the ocean’s most adorable, quirky – and important – ambassadors.
This Penguin Awareness Day, we’re focused on the Critically Endangered African penguin: they’ve lost 93% of their historic numbers and could be extinct by 2035.
With only 9 900 breeding pairs left in South Africa and Namibia, African penguin populations are still decreasing at speed. Competition with commercial fisheries for sardines and anchovies, coupled with climate-related shifts in their prey fishes’ distribution, has sent these iconic seabirds into extinction freefall.
But we’re not powerless to save them: support the NGOs tackling resource competition, biologically-meaningful fisheries management, and creating new penguin colonies.
Footage from Artlist.
