Russia's Defence Minister, General Sergie Shoigu, on April 30 inspected the infrastructure at Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Arkhangelsk region

Plesetsk Cosmodrome will be used by the RuMoD to launch military satellites using the Angara family of light and heavy rockets, Soyuz medium launchers and Rokot light launchers.

General Shoigu's inspection was aimed at ascertaining compliance to his earlier order to increase the number of launches from Plesetsk.

Following his inspection, General Shoigu confirmed that Plesetsk is now in a position to provide launch facilities to RuAF to any desired orbit. He said that Plesetsk cosmodrome has already launched six Angara rockets and is now gearing up to launch three more in 2024.

Modernisation of the cosmodrome for launch of Soyuz carrier rockets is underway aimed at doubling Soyuz launch frequency.

The cosmodrome is also being modernised for launch of Rokot light launchers, with test launches scheduled to start in December 2024.

Rokot is a light launcher based on the UR-100N (SS-19 Stiletto) ICBM,

It weighs 107 tonnes, its length is 29 metres and its maximum diameter 2.5 metres.

The liquid-fueled launch vehicle comprises three stages. The lower two are based on the Soviet UR-100N ICBM; the first stage used an RD-0233 / RD-0234 engine complex, while the second stage used an RD-0235. The third stage was a Briz-KM, which has a mass of about 6 tonnes when fuelled, and is capable of flying for 7 hours and reigniting its engine six times during flight, allowing different satellites to be placed into different orbits.

All stages use Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) (unsymmetrical Dimethylhydrazine) as fuel and dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) as oxidiser.

The Rokot launcher, which featured a Ukrainian control system, last flew in 2019, due to Ukraine's ban on technology exports to Russia.

A fully Russian-made Rokot light carrier rocket, named Rokot-M, is now being operationalized to meet the requirements of the RuMoD.
