Just watched the first season and I'm really surprised at how much I liked it. The two leads have amazing chemistry and I loved every single last one of the guest stars. This show has a lot of potential, I expect Paul Dano's role to be expanded upon next season and for them to delve more into the backstory of this "Hihi" character. 8.3/10 for me.

For my own benefit, I just imagine that they verified each other's identity off screen.

Perhaps the verification process started with a secret question that only spies know the correct answer followed by asking Hihi to validate the other party. Surely, Hihi has a method of verifying the identity of the person they are talking to.

Six episodes in, really loving it so far. As others have pointed out, this is almost nothing like the original movie. I'd rather compare it to like a genre mashup of Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage with action/romcom elements - hell, in more than one episode, the action only happens in 30s of screentime in between long conversations. Each episode so far charts a stage of a relationship, from initial awkwardness to the honeymoon phase to the petty arguments down the line. The brilliance of the writing is how the spy drama is intertwined with those phases, with the characters they encounter during each episodes' missions providing a foil for what the Smiths' relationship is going through. Episode 5 is my favorite example of this, with the billionaire they're protecting being a man-child they have to babysit, emulating the trials and tribulations of child-care as John starts wanting a kid himself.

That bothered me too. It seemed like the show was only interested in exploring their relationship. I’m sure all the criticisms can be hand waved away by saying, “Hihi pulled some strings.”

But to get into your actual question, spoiler: I dunno, this is kind of dumb? The lady works for who? Why is she receiving a bomb and what is she going to do with it? And then they divert it to the house they blow up. But how did Hihi/the agency know it would go to the right place in the house and blow up at the right time? The easiest thing I thought of is that it all doesn't matter and it was supposed to be some kind of test setup by the agency to observe and evaluate the two as a team. It definitely is one of the more nonsensical missions from the show.

Watching some of the Mr&Mrs Smith and it's cool, funny and sexy as it should be, EXCEPT I keep thinking about this guy whenever there's a "hihi".
