Why I think the $1800 LG CX55 4K OLED TV is the BEST 'Bang for your Buck' reference monitor

I have been using LG Self-Lit 4k OLED TVs as reference monitors for a few years now and have loved every minuite of it. Recently LG sent me their new CX55 to try out and make a video showing that you can get a great grading display for under $2000. Isn't technology great?

It seems this tv is unavailable now. Is the GX the predecessor to the CX55?

Theo, great to know this. I have the same TV, and hadn't realized it was good enough to be a reference monitor. After I calibrated this monitor for Resolve, I just used the LUT in the Resolve Color tab for the project settings. Sounds like there is a better way to do this where you upload the LUT into the TV. Is it the exact same LUT with the same settings during profiling in SpectraCal Calman that you upload to the TV, and once you have done that you don't have to use a Monitor LUT in Resolve?

Thanks for your great content!

This is awesome, man. You're right, such a good price for what it is. No need, necessarily, to go more high end when this serves the same purpose.

I recently picked up a $500 sony. It's basically a giant android prone without the touchscreen. I have to wait for it to boot up if I turn it completely off, it constantly nags me to set up an account, connect it to the internet, etc (which will never happen) but the colors are pretty good, at least good enough for the work I do. I do wish I could calibrate it, but it looks pretty close to what my calibrated monitors look like. Maybe I'll get an LG next year for my write-offs.

Hello, great video.
The lg oled cx has a neutral preset in the expert mode dark room and filmmaker mode. Your own photos and videos are also displayed relatively correctly - even with playback from a laptop, provided the HDMI input in question is NOT set to "PC". You have to do without sharpness in fonts and symbols. As soon as I switch to "PC", I have sharp fonts but completely different colors. Why is this and how can I get the same correct color setting in PC mode as in the other operating modes? I would like to use the tv as a monitor for image processing. The representation should come as close as possible to the subsequent photo printout. Maybe you can help me.

Thank you for this :-) Since LG comes out with new models all the time... what would be a comparable model to purchase right now that has the ability for colorgrading and switching of the screen protection?

So if you can watch Netflix on your reference monitor why haven’t you moved your color grading set up to the living room? Seamless switching between da Vinci and Netflix. Honestly from a professional like you I really would expect to see that level of efficiency in your every day life;)

is there a smaller model.. 55" is too large for how close I'll have to sit to it,

Scary stuff to use an WRGB OLED as reference.
You know that the white subpixel adds more BLUE energy to the picture and that these tvs changes in whitebalance depending on if the white subpixel is used or not.
only use an calibrated RGB display as reference.

i also wonder how you deal with the blueish/greenish whites and grays on these WRGB OLEDs?
how do you know its from the tv or if its from the content?

facts from spectrometer testing on real content.
all white and netral gray areas in the picture has an added blue energy that shouldnt be there.
on those the white subpixel is in use.

Hi Theo, first of thanks for the video. Second, sorry for my English I am not a native speaker.

At the moment i have a two display setup, an Eizo CX271 and a cheap 4K Samsung display that does not even cover srgb. For some reason, i can´t manage to make either of both color accurate. The Eizo claimed to be but it is over 6years old so maybe it is an age thing.

So i am looking for to buy a new monitor for my color grading. So far i thought the BenQ SW321C could be a nice choice. but The more i read the more often i stumble across OLED TV´s for grading.

Would buy an LG C9 or CX55 or whatever be a better choice for me? and how good are they when it comes to color accuracy and do they cover the full rec709 and other color spaces? and do you recommend to feed them through a decline? i own a IntensityPro 4K but I have no idea if it is useful or not. Thanks a lot

greetings from Germany.

here you have a link to a picture of the displays i use at the moment, guess you will see and understand my problem. Both are calibrated!

Just bought this 55 CX for my studio. It is last year's model so got it for 999e while C1 is still almost 1800e. No-brainer and absolutely excellent value. The honeymoon with it is still ahead.

Big Question for you Theo: When I am calibrating my C9 OLED, should I be using hdmi black level high or low? Also, for SDR should I be using Data or Video levels in Resolve? I'm struggling to find any answers on black level on the TV.
