This is how a car's flooded engine sounds like

The Lights work, the radio works, but when she turns on the ignition, it tries and tries but just sputters out. She adds that it feels like it "surges." Any ideas?

Thanks for sharing this Edwin, I thought my engine may have been flooded and you have now confirmed it!

I know this video is old but thanl you so much for your update. I tried putting it in neutreal to rev the engine and it worked after a couple tries.

It sounds like the timing belt is snapped. (No compression)

Update 11/19/2014.  We called a tow truck to send it to a shop, but when the driver tow truck driver showed up he said that it was a flooded engine.  Simple fix:  start up the engine (even with the sputtering), put it in neutral and just rev the engine in order to burn off the gas.  It took a while to start it up and about 3-4 minutes of revving the engine to burn off all of the gas.  We have always heard of a "flooded engine" but never experienced it until this happened to us.  How did this occur in the first place?  #1 -- we drove it out of the garage in reverse a few feet (in order to put up the attic ladder) and then forward a few feet.  Supposedly this could flood your engine.  Another friend had the same thing happen to him when he did a similar maneuver with his car.

Had this happen to me yesterday, I hadn't driven my car long enough the previous day (I drive a 96 Micra.) Took about 2-3 minutes to start up, I realised I should keep my foot planted on the accelerator as I turned it over, then when it finally turned on, the engine was very weak. I then realised I needed to keep the accelerator planted down even longer, (only realised this when the engine cut out, sigh) which got it running again. Moral of the story, if you own a Micra, don't just move it a few feet and then turn it off.

Modern Kias and Hyundais do this if you do very short trips in cold/semi-cold weather. Say you just needed to move the car a little, let the engine run for up to 5-10 minutes before switching off for parking. Got stuck this morning because I didn't know this could happen to a 3y old car.

It sounds like somebody gasping for air.

It sounds like it has loss of compression to me as if the timing belt or chain has broken. As I said, it just sounds like it to me.

That could be a million things besides it being flooded

Try putting spark plugs in and cranking it

Temperature sensor stuffed. It's sending wrong info to injector telling them to put more fuel in to run rich

does that mean the engine has water in it ?

It's like the car needs to drain the water and replace the wires

Why in the world would you be trying to crank over a car that was just in a flood/water damage. It’s literally the worst thing you can do

It's been a long time since this video was posted so I doubt I'll get a response, but I rap and this sound effect along with your voices would be amazing to include in a song if I could get your permission.
