Over Half of Sudan's Population Require Protection, Says Humanitarian Coordinator | United Nations

Press conference by Clementine Nkweta-Salami, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan on the humanitarian situation in Sudan.
The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, today (10 Nov) said, “Sudan's civilians have suffered through almost seven months of intense conflict and a humanitarian tragedy that only grows bleaker by the day,” noting that “over half of the population, 25 million people, require assistance and protection.”
Talking to journalists in New York, Nkweta-Salami said, “more than 6 million people have fled their homes and are displaced inside Sudan or in neighbouring countries.
The Humanitarian Coordinator said the statement of commitments adopted in Jeddah earlier in the week by Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces “marks a moment of truth for the country.”
She said, “we owe it to the people of Sudan to ensure that the promises made by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to protect civilians and provide unimpeded humanitarian access are kept.”
Nkweta-Salami called on the two parties “to abide by their obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law.”
She said, “this is not optional. These attacks should cease and those responsible held accountable.”
The Humanitarian Coordinator said, “the world is beset by crises, many that garner much more attention than the crisis in Sudan for a multitude of factors, but not because of the scale of the crisis or the depth of misery. In this regard, the Sudan crisis has few equals.”
To conclude, she said, “we hope that at some point there will be accountability, but just to say that particularly the crimes against women, particularly the indiscriminate killings; of course, we've heard of crimes against the Masalit in Darfur. All these are egregious violations of human rights, and it must stop.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), an estimated 5.8 million people have been displaced within and outside Sudan since mid-April 2023. At least 85,800 people fled Sudan over the past month seeking safety and protection in neighbouring countries.
Conflict has severely affected agriculture in many parts of the country raising concerns on food security in the coming months.
