Kevin is such a genius and a musical genius. He has so many talents in him I can't believe he hasn't self-combusted. Can play multiple instruments, sing, beatbox, write, compose, speaks multiple languages, perfect pitch, as if that wasn't enough, he was pre-med at Yale. He is also a humble and wonderful human.

Nope, he's playing the high D because it's in the song! You should listen to the original and you'll be even more amazed at Kevin's genius in this cover. (Also, Kevin has perfect pitch so he doesn't really need a pitch reference. Cellos have no frets, so it's not uncommon for cello players to have perfect pitch.)
