Farts are a natural part of being a human but for some reason we all get embarrassed and
shy when we do it. It is said that humans fart up to 14 to 21 times a day.

Farts also known as flatulence are created when we eat. That is because when we swallow our food, we also swallow air which contains gases like nitrogen and
oxygen. As the food and gases are digested they travel through our digestive system.

When food is broken down in the large intestine, other gases like hydrogen, carbon
dioxide and methane are made. All of these gases in the digestive system have to escape
and so they came out as a fart.

Farting isn't gross. You may think that farting is gross because it can often smell like
rotten eggs, but it is what a healthy body does when it digests food.
Did you know that not all farts smell. Thats because only 1% of farts are made up of the
smelly stuff called hydrogen sulphide.

What you eat can make your farts smell worse!
Our farts will smell worse when we eat foods with lots of sulphur in them like eggs, meat,
broccoli and nuts .
This is because when these foods are broken down they create hydrogen sulphide, that
smells like rotten egg gas.

So, in the future, your first reaction to a fart shouldn't be to hold it in. It can sometimes be
your body's sign that it's time to take a trip to the bathroom.

The bathroom is also a good place to go if you're feeling particularly gassy because it's not polite to fart in social settings, like in class or at the dinner table (yuck!). But don't worry if this happens accidentally. Just remember to say "excuse me"!
