Diwali 2023 will be celebrated on Sunday, November 12, 2023

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a major Hindu festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists¹. It is a "five-day festival" that usually falls in October or November. The festival symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance"

During Diwali, people light up their homes with *diyas* (oil lamps) and decorate them with *rangolis* (patterns made with colored powder or sand). They also perform **puja** (worship and prayer), offer *havan* (fire offering), observe *vrat* (fasting), give *dāna* (charity), attend *melā* (fairs/shows), clean and decorate their homes, burst fireworks, exchange gifts, and partake in a feast and sweets .

The festival is celebrated to mark different events in different parts of India. In northern India, it is celebrated to commemorate the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. In southern India, it is celebrated to honor Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. In western India, it is celebrated to honor the goddess Lakshmi.
