The trick by using rape seed oil or hemp oil (no joke) is the chemical part called unsatured fatty acids. They contain double bonds in the aliphatic side chains. They are capable of chemically binding free oxiden which prevents rust formation and unsaturated fatty acids are not as sticky as pure alkalic saturated chains. Steam oil is different in the content, it has chemically longer aliphatic side chains and is therefore thicker due to its usage at higher temperatures and very imporatnt it contains sulfur. This sulfur chemically reacts with the iron or partially replaces oxigen in rust. So it helps finally to protect the iron from early 'degration' ...

Maybe it's the obsessive in me as well, but what is going on with the valve gear links? It looks like it moves through a circle. Is the one arm slightly out of time with the other, or are they two different lengths?
