“Oh I’m not like the Flash at all, some would say I’m the reverse”

Thawne is the proper definition of a perfect villian. Goats are always goats.

It’s actually kinda sad, finding out that you are defined to be the greatest foe of a person you admire and want to be

It's kind of tragic the way it happened in the comics: Thawne was an obsessed Flash fan in the 25th century. He got a PhD in 20th/21st century history, did his thesis on the emergence of superheroes. Taught history (his students nicknamed him "Professor Zoom" because he often rushed into class at the last minute because he'd gotten distracted researching the Flash).

He eventually went through his whole family fortune replicating the process that created the Flash, so he could become the Flash of the 25th century. He saved some people, then he had the idea to sneak into the Flash Museum and get access to the Cosmic Treadmill, a device Flash used to allow him to travel in time without causing huge shock waves (if you run in place, you don't trail a huge sonic BOOM all over the place).

Thawne targeted the day and hour the Flash Museum was dedicated, because he knew (from the plaque that was still next to the door) that Flash had been at the opening ceremony. He wanted to tell Flash he was going to carry on his legacy in the future and get his hero's blessing.

Unfortunately, he missed his target and arrived several years later. Still mentally discombobulated by the trip, he stumbled into the Rogues Gallery, where the Flash's greatest villains were commemorated. He saw the display for the one villain Flash had been forced to kill in order to stop him: The Reverse Flash, a.k.a. "Professor Zoom, " who was actually a time traveler from the 25th century named Eobard Thawne.

At that moment, Thawne realized that the man he most admired in the entire history of humanity, the man he'd dedicated his life to learning about and continuing the legacy of, was also the man who was fated to kill him. His mind broke, and all his obsessive love for Barry Allen curdled into obsessive hatred. In that moment, the knowledge that he would become the Reverse Flash was what *caused* him to become the Reverse Flash. A predestination paradox.

If you think about it… Barry basically just gave thawne the idea to kill his mother once he learns his identity

I love how barry is using the shadows as another mask hiding his face from his enemy.

Unfortunately Zoom didn't meet with Thawne in this episode.

Both Matt Letscher and Tom Cavanagh are amazing. I think they both were the reason the series was so god damn good at start.

I'f this thawne (S2) comes back in the final episode and kinda creates the whole original timeline then that would be a nice ending for the series, for the last run we'll see of thawne and Barry to be creating the very moment that changed Barry's life forever

"Why do you hate me so much?" Hasn't been truly answered.

He only became a villain because time showed him he was going to be. That’s the paradox

This explanation is better than the season 8 explanation

He's a living paradox. What makes this even more ironic is that he constantly changes the timeline and writes in a journal the timeline is malleable. Yet he sees himself fighting the Flash. It's fate.
