I have booked a couchette, the sleeper car with 4 to 6 berths, several times. Back in the day they cost about $20 with your Eurail Pass, although prices certainly have increased over the decades. However, it's merely a bed. When you book a couchette, the conductor comes through the train and checks tickets, and if you cross borders overnight, the conductor takes your passport, so that they can clear customs on your behalf, while you sleep. Before you reach your destination city, the conductor returns to give you back your passport. There are no showers in the couchette, nor are there toilets. If you have bathroom needs during the night, you must walk to the nearest public restroom onboard, usually at the ends of every car. Although I don't know the reservation fee these days, I can't recall the last time I had a place to sleep for $20. I loved using them.

We all know that we must validate the Eurail Pass before its first use. Only official train personnel can do this. They view your passport, your pass, they stamp it with an official stamp with the date of the first jouney and write the date of first use and the last date of use. If one wishes to use the train pass immediately after landing in one of Europe's airport with rail connections, one still must find the staffed rail ticket/information window to get this process under your belt. Frankfur/Main has DB personnel, as does Zuerich for SBB personnel. I am trying to fly either into Munich or Stuttgart, where there are S-Bahn stations and service, which are part of the national train network (U-Bahn trains are not covered by Eurail pass, because U-Bahns are run by the city's transportation systems, not the national rail network). Both Munich and Stuttgart have S-Bahns, but I can't find out, if there are actual DB rail personnel at these airports to validate the passes or not. Can someone let me know, if DB staffs these airport locations? If not, I'll have to purchase a ticket from the ticket machine, simply to arrive at the main train stations of the city to have their DB staff validate my pass. I really don't like the idea of spending more money for a train, which is already covered by my pass. The same is true for Duesseldort's airport.

I have used the Eurail Pass for over 20 Years and had NO problem with the Pass or Trains. For the Res. I go on the German Rail site and get a Res. with no Problem. In France I go to a Station and they take care of it.\; the same in Holland and the UK

I've also tried using the RailEurope reservation system. Half of the time it says it could not confirm with train operator. =( There's simply no good way to book a train reservation outside of just booking at the train station.

Very good data. So many changes in 1985 west europe only and no uk. Travel ed light. One army blanket one army canteen when out of water got water at the rail station. One small back pack. Small book all cost like a diary. 21 days on the rail. So many changes but almost 50 yrs ago. Surprised can use trukey but retired military can not use military space to go in or out of our base in Turkey yours Evans w robinson

gosh i guess they made it more complicated. I used to just get on the train i wanted - no bookings - no nothing and GO. then i'd get my ticket punched somewhere along the journey - simplicity itself.

Don't get the eurail pass. Sometimes you have to do reservations weeks in advance and not all the trains accept eurail pass

Title should be "Eurail for DUMMIES" I've used Eurail, and regular trains in Europe for 12 yrs with NO issues.

How much is price difference if we book from the station . I am planning London, France and Italy 3 weeks. How about all train route ?
