Adding and editing layout objects within FileMaker is a very common task. In this video we walk through the various layout objects and discuss how to most efficiently work with them while designing a layout.

the grouping with filemaker 18 and maybe 17 (cant remember if the change was in 17) has been updated so you can click to selected a group of objects, click again to select an individual object within the group and you now can get full control of a selected grouped object. I believe this also works for groups within groups within groups etc... its one if the best features i think they added in a long time.

If you click on the icon of the text object all you have to do is click (WHITHOUT MOVING THE MOUSE) anywhere in the layout, including the canvas to the right, and start typing. If you move a bit but dont drag to make a set shape, FileMaker will create a set 1 character wide text block which you will have to clic out to get out the text zone and click the block to have the handles appear to resize it.

Using the ENTER of the KEYPAD returns the cursor to the last used object type. As long as there is an object selected (any type) the KEYBOARD's Enter creates a text block over that object and positions the cursor to be ready to type. 

Double-clicking (even clicking normally but twice) on the icon of an object type forces the cursor into this mode and you can then create several of these objects in succession.

when I put two fields above each other they tend to group automatically. If I try to ungroup, filemaker says something about I'll loose the button function...?
