You would never understand this song if you’ve never been in a relationship with someone you felt as if you couldn’t live without then one day you’re forced too. It is a timeline of giving in, pain, thoughts, curiosity, not wanting to love again, wanting to reach out ( then tell yourself I just wanna check up on them), don’t do it. This song reminds me of me and my ex fiancé.. he is a good guy just.. wasn’t the one for me, you know? I still love him, maybe not in love but, I feel this song on a whole different level because when we split up I told him I didn’t wanna be an ex. We were fucking great at being friends I could tell him anything without being judged then we got together stayed with each other for over 2 years but, like she said ‘We were way to good a being friends.’ I think this song was wrote for the people that lost a boyfriend/girlfriend and doesn’t wanna lose them forever, doesn’t wanna be known as an ex wants to be friends because real love, you’ll always be there for each other even if that means y’all were once together and now you’re working on being friends, starting all over.
Like she said ‘just cause it’s different and we’re nothing the same doesn’t mean things have to change.’ Now that being said to me that means just cause we’re not together doesn’t mean we can not, not be there for each other. Love is love no matter who it’s with either your mom, dad, friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, or even ex.
It take a real strong person a lot of courage to wanna be friends with their ex lover even after they split up. That means they still care just not on that same level anymore like she said again lol ‘I don’t have to be in love with you to love you.’ At least thats how this song makes me feel. 💕
