Nothing in John 10 says Jesus is God

When I was in Catholic School we learned a hymn that began as follows:

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
And we pray that our unity will one day be restored
And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
Yeah they'll know we are Christians by our love

There you have it. We are all God.

I still remember being flabbergasted when I read the part where Jesus quotes that psalm and NO ONE in my church ever brought it up. It really seemed to heavily imply a sort of deification of human beings THEN.

Exactly this… if Jesus’ response was supposed to be him admitting to be God he’s really trying his best to be misunderstood…

And I didn’t realize the deceptive translations using capital G (probably because the translators want to force their presuppositions into the text) despite the original Greek not having a definite article.

This is why I wish that I was able to travel back in time to the same time period that X or Y text was written. I could read it and understand it how it was meant to be understood, not how people a few hundred years later would think they understood it or imposed upon it.

Also, based upon my reading of the Hebrew Bible, I very much agree that reading the word “El” or “Elohim” (or for the NT Greek “theos”) as “divine” instead of “God” makes so many passages make more sense.

I truly believe that whatever Jesus said or thought about himself, he didn’t think that he was co-eternal or co-omnipotent with YHWH. He’d be confused with modern Christian theology.

All of Dr McClellan's videos deserve up voting and repeated viewing but this one stands out even in that crowed. I wish that everyone interested in any religion could see this video several times. The points he makes here would clarify not only issues that are important to standard Christians and non-standard followers of Jesus but that cause much misunderstanding between people who take Jesus seriously and followers of other religions. I wish Christians and people who take Jesus seriously could keep these points in mind if ever they discuss religion with Jews, so that the discussion could proceed harmoniously. Thanks. Mike

This stuff messed me up as a kid. I didn't know the history, but I knew how to "read the sentences that come before and after, " as gradeschool taught. I absolutely _did_ know when parents and preachers were making their points by taking things completely out of context, but I trusted authority too much to argue. So I must have been wrong.

Almost thirty years later, I still struggle to trust my own judgment.

30 I and the Father are one...

34 ...Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’?

On some level, I pretended not to see it.
