Azula’s a master liar

Toph has the ability to know if people are lying by sensing the vibration in the ground around someone. The only exceptions are Azula and Old Sweepy. Old Sweepy informed Team avatar that they had shipped Appa off to Whaletale Island. This turned out to be false. Old Sweepy hoped to earn his way back into Long Feng's good graces by trying to lead the team out of Ba Sing Se.

Aang lied to Toph and Sokka when he claimed to have mastered the Avatar state after meeting with the Guru. They were flying on Appa so not being on the ground probably negated her senses.

To be fair, Azula wasn't really lying. Lying implies telling someone a lie and expecting them to believe it. Azula just made a false and absurd statement not even caring about be result, which is very different to her trying to fool someone

Toph really is something though. Do you know the kinda brain processing power she has to be able to constantly keep track of all she’s feeling? To know who is standing where? Who and how they move and what their intentions are? Not to mention the heart rate thing. Shits incredible.

could also be that the sweeping from the broom caused vibrations that disrupted Tophs vision a bit they could have blocked the fine tuning needed to tell lies, sort of like ripples disrupting each other in a pond if you toss two pebbles into it near each other
