Walmart can not force you

Let me tell you a small story. Last year I bought a coat from Costco. Last month, i was shopping at Costco and left my coat draped in shopping cart. The employee counted the items in the cart and kept saying, "You have 19 items in the cart and your receipt only shows 18!" I finally pointed out that my coat was not a part of what I purchased that day. They are absolutely looking for theft.

I remember when I was little the workers would always put a smiley face. Core memory

No they're 100% checking to see if you stole something it's written in your contract if you ever read it when you sign up for the membership you're signing up also to have your receipt checked and your cart checked when you leave.
tommygunvsrocky
They also check to see if you purchased the items on the bottom of the basket.

“It’s not to prevent stealing we just make sure to mark every receipt to prevent stealing”
jacob
They can do both, helping you out and stopping theft. You'll notice they scrutinize your receipt a lot more if you went thru self checkout - they know you weren't helped by a regular cashier bc they print the self checkout receipts on different colored paper!

It goes both ways, I used to work at Costco, it actually is to see if we gave you everything and to make sure you weren't charged twice for an item and yes, it's to make sure you aren't stealing

When I was 4 or 5 they used to give me an smiley face at the back 😢 nostalgia

The sheer joy of being a child and the receipt checker is an artist

That's all a lie. Except for the part about the line. They're checking for theft.

As someone who worked at a Costco it was also to make sure we actually scanned everything. If you and your cashier are found missing an item
you can be written up. Our store had a competition for the recipes checkers to catch the most mistakes.

Thanks for the explanations. I always wonder about that

They usually give me a smiley face instead of the line

Having worked the register at several kinds of stores, I truly believe that this would help any store, along with patrons and employees in so many other ways. Having someone else double check receipts before customers leave is actually a really good idea in general

That Costco checkmark holds so much power👑

I hate the receipt checking and the sample stations the most. Both create what is basically traffic jams with people when im judt trying to get from one area to the next for specific items. Samples being worse, its like people are so unaware of their surroundings that they'll just dead stop to try something. So annoying.

Ex Costco employee here so 3 things with the scan it let's inventory know immediately what to restock other 2 reasons are for theft prevention and accuracy at the registers just throwing it out there!
