My grandpa was one of the most respectful, loving, and cheerful man I've known. Every time I would see him, the first thing I would do is give him a long big hug from behind and rub his belly as he gracefully lied his hands on top of mine. My mom would always tell me to not rub his belly because he is an elder and it's bad luck, but he told me that it's okay for me to do it, so then it became tradition. This will be a memory of mine most missed.
Throughout elementary school, my grandpa was always the one picking me up after school. As he held my hand while walking to his car, we would always go to either his house or my house and he would cook me rice and eggs. Due to my parents working day and night, my grandpa was the one who took care of me when they were not present. Even during parent-teacher conferences, he would go for me. I would get away with trouble because of the language barrier between my teacher and him, haha. He wasn't just a strong man mentally and spiritually, his physical strength was beyond mine. Even him being as old as he was, I kid you not, he was still able beat me in arm wrestling. My grandpa was strong. I will definitely miss arm wrestling him to test out his strength.
My grandpa was a leader in our San Diego community. He bridged the gap between Lao and Lue people. Him being the head religious leader at every cultural function that involves Buddhist prayer, allowed me to adapt his leadership qualities and use it with what I do. He was an important man to me, my family, and the Lao/Lue community. My love for him is beyond the definition of love itself. His discipline, hard-work, commitment, work ethic, values, and unconditional love, will definitely be something I will admire forever. Grandpa, you were always wholehearted and loving to me. Thank you for all the precious memories. I love you and miss you so much.
ps. Today is my 24th birthday. What better way than to give back to my grandpa for all he's done for me? This is my letter to you gramps.
