Great review! Great Expectations is the only Dickens I've read as an adult, and I really liked it. It actually reminds me of The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt in the way it's structured, meaning it goes through a boy's life into adulthood, a wonderful surrogate father figure, rich lady benefactor, the girl he's obsessed with, etc.
I bought David Copperfield at a library book sale two years ago and still haven't picked it up though because I'm intimidated😄

I read A Christmas Carol every year but that’s the only Dicken’s book I’ve ever finished. I think I struggle with the wordiness of classics in general and sort of zone out to the plot. It’s interesting to hear you summarise the book because it sounds like it’s worth the read so I feel more inclined to try to read it now haha

And I love your dedicated review. I WILL read it with more of a rose colored tint next time because you gave me some things to think about. 💓

Great review!! I think we did an abridged version in high school so I plan to read the full thing at some point.

Dickens is my favorite male author. I’m reading Bleak House right now. I love his humor and satire and I find his characters unforgettable, . I also recently reread Great Expectations and it was a 5 star for me as well. I also heard he was paid per word which kind of makes sense as to his verbosity. But Victor Hugo was probably the most verbose in Les Mis. I love the names he uses for characters …just love his writing.

I feel like this is a Charles Dickens book that I would like. I’ve never read any of his books before.

Okay, so, just like with AK I didn’t love this because it showed all the wrong angles. Yes, it is honest and more real than what I enjoy, but not my favorite BECAUSE 1) Pip is loved but doesn’t choose well those who haves loved until when we don’t get to hear about it; 2) Estelle never changes - not through being raised by a codependent, emotionally inept parent, not through an emotionally absent marriage and not through Pip’s love. It just grinds my gears!!! I like Pip’s growth but I wish his growth would have been shown through what was good rather than all the harm and hurt.
I hope you read Nicholas Nickleby soon - or Oliver Twist! Not as accessible for readers in general, maybe, but oh so accessible for my heart.
