This is a good project with a confusing name. A trebuchet is not a catapult and a catapult is not a trebuchet. It's either one or the other. A catapult uses tension (ie spring) for power with a rigid projectile holder. A trebuchet uses weight for power with a flexible sling as a projectile holder and speed multiplier.
This unit uses weight and a sling and is thus a trebuchet. Historically it's an example of a technological improvement over the catapult. For demo and teaching purposes it would be good to build both to show the differences.
