Therapist, Taylor Palmby, introduces another therapist, Olivia Saleh, to Chop Suey by System of a Down for the first time! They discuss how the sound of the song oscillates between chaos and mourning and also how it oscillates between trying to cover up one's own pain and being upset when their pain goes unnoticed by others.

Male psychologist here.. I grew up on this music and believe an entire generation found solitude in the emotional expression of all the pain and distress their parents had no words or tools for. Drugs, divorce, death, we had no way to cope and no online communities. These metal artists SOAD, Slipknot, Korn, gave us a conduit to express the emotion we didn't even know we had. I'll forever be grateful for the connection I felt through headphones sitting in the dark alone..

It's from the gospel of Luke 23:46 when Jesus is in the cross. He says "father into your hands I comend my spirit... Father why have you forsaken me?"

Rick Rubin was such a genius in how he helped serj finish this song. it became the best part of the song at the end when he screams "Father!"

Taylor - your joy in watching her reactions is hilarious and awesome!! BTW - yes it’s me, the same David Gregory that suggested Pushit. Love this song too!! Keep rockin!

WOW! You just blew my mind!
I've been listening to this song (but now i have to say simply "hearing" it) for over 2 decades & I've NEVER made the connection of, as you put it, "why is nobody seeing my pain [but] I'm doing everything I can to cover up my pain. "
Very well put, thank you from a chronic depression sufferer for that wonderful insight...

It's so fun to watch Taylor in the same position all us metal fans have been in for years. Watching someone experiencing the joy of the things we love, is very satisfying.

Great reaction beautiful young ladies. SOAD was an amazing band and you can't go wrong with Chop Suey. The lighting in this video really highlighted how beautiful your eyes are Taylor and Olivia. Cheers and have a great evening !!

Now you absolutely have to do Aerials. I loved Taylor's reaction and interpretation. I'd love to see Olivia's.

After that intro line "Heard of the cuisine. Delicious..." I was like: Oh yeah... She's in for a ride. She doesn't have a clue of what will hit her in a moment.
When I was young, I always had a blast with this song. Now, in my 40's, I still have a blast, but ALWAYS shed a tear. The level of understanding and have dealt with most of my "demons" this hits at a deeper level, shedding layers and going right to the core.

The face you pull when your just feeling it. I started watching this channel for your reactions, stayed for the evaluation. Just brilliant!

From the perspective of a trauma/PTSD recovering cop, the song is extremely relatable…both the words and the feel.

The YouTube algorithm suggested your channel, and I loved seeing the discussion about what’s behind the music, beyond just the heavy sound and intense visuals.

To me, it feels like a more raw (sometimes not so much) way of expressing our fears and traumas, helping us learn more about ourselves.

I had so much fun watching your reactions and Olivia’s, along with the talk about the music and the video.

Can’t wait for the next one!

Big hugs from a fan in Brazil!

I like how in the video there is this one short scene where they are eating chop suey and are having this "are you ffin kidding me?" look, because they had to change the name of the song for the label (which has been mentioned numerous times already).
