Here's Why I'm Buying The Nintendo DS Lite In 2022

The Nintendo DS Lite is a handheld that took the world by storm in the mid 2000s and even today is a great system to own. Now with where the market is with other retro systems, the DS Lite is one of the best buys you can make now.

My son recently turned 5, and for Christmas my wife and I decided to get him a DS Lite as his very first system that is his (rather than just playing on our Switch every once in a while). The library is so huge, and the games he enjoys are typically only $5-$10 each. And of course, DS Download Play means that the three of us can play multiplayer on majority of our games with only one cartridge. We feel much better getting him the DS Lite vs getting him a Switch Lite

Can confirm the battery life on these things. I have the red version just like in the video. The last time I played it was around 2015. I turned it on for the first time since then in Feb. 2022 and the thing still had a full charge. Incredible.

Love the DS Lite. I got the red model as a 7 year old for Christmas 2009. My childhood truly would not have been the same without the DS. Seventh generation gaming was perfect.

I've done shell swaps on two DS lites for clear aftermarket ones, they look pretty nice. I found mine in a gutter a few years back, working. Shortly after the top screen died, I replaced it, and then (stupidly) sprayed contact cleaner in slot 2 destroying the bottom screen. So on that model I've replaced the shell and both screens. I call it the DS of Theseus.

The retro market really is freaking nuts these days. The prices and availability have gone through the roof for one and way down for the other. Supply and demand at it's most ruthless.

The DS lite is probably my favorite Handheld to ever exist. The design, the colors, the feeling of luxury. You felt special owning a DS back then, and you really felt apart of a community. Everybody had a DS. the amount of hours I’ve spent on bus rides to and from school, playing Mario kart or NSMB’s mini games with friends are countless. I’ll never forget the memories or the names of the people I played with during those times. Greatest handheld of all time. You really had to be there, especially as an 8 year old kid.

I recently bought a DS Lite for $30 Canadian, and replaced the (broken) top screen. I had a soldering kit, and no prior repair experience. I took my time, and eventually got it working. It was pretty stressful, but super rewarding!

This is one of my favorite systems ever. Such a amazing library combined with game boy games. It was interesting seeing you take it apart so confidently and solve the issue so quick. Very impressive!

A DS Lite with Everdrives in both slots has been my go to handheld these days. It's great for the pocket and you have access to so many games... It can play pretty much everything a Analogue Pocket does plus the DS games

Keep an eye on the DSi consoles as well. They’re usually pretty cheap and those can be software modded with Twilight Menu++. They also have an SD card slot. So far I haven’t had any issues throwing the entire libraries of the DS, NES, GB, GBC, GBA, GG, Master System, on there, and I think they just recently added support for the NeoGeo pocket/color

I grew up with the DS lite being the most advance technology I have ever seen as a kid. I got mine for Christmas 2008 and it has never failed me.

True story, my DS lite was in our garage for at least 5 years, and still had a full battery when I found it. I was like "why didn't Nintendo use these magical batteries for Wii-motes?" I invested in no less than 20 AA and AAA rechargeable batteries when the Wii started devouring them in less than a week. Even turned off, the batteries would end up dead within a month just by sitting inside the Wii remotes.

Honestly the DS Lite might be the perfect DS system. It can play DS and GBA games, The DS can play fake/Bootleg games something that the DSI won't do. Overall it's just a great handheld. Main down side would be Graphic because the PSP is definitely the better looking handheld and the hinges on the DS can break/become loose.

I have felt this way for the past couple of years - the combo of GBA games and DS games makes a huge library of great games, and it lasts for DAYS on a single charge. And it's reasonably pocketable!

A couple of months back, on a trip to Germany, I found one in an old retro games store for around $70 so I picked it up and it’s pretty great! I’d say the ds lite is an amazing choice for anyone who wants to play gba games and of course ds games. Definitely would recommend!

One of my best buys of last year was an eBay aucton that included a pink DS Lite and a blue DSi for £30. Crazy that a few games were also included and everything worked perfectly! But yeah, almost regret buying an OG GBA when I then twigged that the pink DS Lite will run the GBA games with a lovely backlight included.

Your statements about the quality of the batteries in the DS and DSLite are spot on

I left my OG phat DS uncharged for at least 3 years(not exaggerating) I turned it on one day while my 3DS was charging and still got about 4 hours out of the battery. It blew my mind. And the fact that it still charged after that as if nothing happened was amazing.

I bought one to play pokemon diamond in 2008. I then discovered I could use it to move all my pokemon from leaf green and sapphire into more recent games, and since then I've looked after it very well. It still works and holds a charge.
