When I was just a little guy in about 1952. My folks dropped me off with my grandparents for a weekend and as we watched them drive out of sight I was about to throw a hissy when the sounds of many massive engines caught my attention. Even at age 4 or so, I was aware of most WWII Fighters and bombers like the B 17, B 24, & the B 29 from news reels and old cousins models dangling from their bedroom ceilings, but a flight of three B 36 Peacemakers came roaring across our view at what I now know was no higher than 1, 500-2, 000 feet overhead. The rumble of their massive radial engines rattled grandma's windows and my 10. year old uncle was stunned, yelling at grandpa & grandpa that the planes had their engines facing backwards.
That moment planted a seed that made me an airplane junkie. Plotting out that flights direction of travel, I am convinced these planes we're heading directly to Minneapolis St. Paul Wold-Chamberlland airport, about 100 miles away. I decided that these planes we're either heading there to refuel or perhaps were going 😢 as there have been military detachments there since before WWII.❤❤❤

The defense department wanted Convair to build Jack Northrop XB49. Northrop refused, so eleven wings were cut up and scraped. The B 36 was just a really big bullet catcher. The XB 49 was faster, more maneuverable and stealthy.
I got my information from a book I bought at The Planes of Fame Museum at Chino airport East of Los Angeles in Chino, California.
KTLA channel 5 TV in Los Angeles interview Jack Northrop before he died just after the B 2 was put into service, 50 Year after the flying Wing was first proposed. It did allow Boeing the opportunity to build the B 47 B 52, and 700 series passenger air liners.
