Red Earth - Leo

Red Earth, also known as War-Zard in Japan, was Capcom's first CPS-3 title, released in November 1996. It received a limited release in Japan, and an even more limited release in the US. Red Earth has the distinction of coming out a mere three months before Street Fighter 3: New Generation.
RE can best be categorized as a boss rush fighting game with RPG elements. Your playable characters can level up to a maximum of level 32 (very tough to achieve; most playthroughs end with the character between the levels of 7-12 on average; your level is determined by your score), and learn new moves and gain new status resistances along the way. Gems you collect can be used to perform super moves.
There are four playable characters: Leo, the king of Savalia, Tessa, a traveling sorceress, Kenji, a ninja who's the leader of the Oniwabanshu, and Mai-Ling, a Goran fighter. There are eight bosses to defeat in all, ranging from towering dinosaur-like beast Hydron to a robotic statue named GiGi that fights while holding multiple swords.
Red Earth has a 6-button layout akin to most Street Fighter games. There is a parry type mechanic achieved by pressing two attack buttons of the same strength. Doing this with good timing can effectively parry attacks that are several hits and cause the user to take little to no damage.
Being a CPS-3 game, Red Earth has exemplary sprite design and animations. I wish the game had gotten ported. The most Capcom ever did with the game was put Tessa in another game (the same game, Pocket Fighter, has some other Red Earth references), and reuse some of the characters for Capcom Fighting Evolution.
Allegedly, the game did poorly enough in arcades to where most of the machines were recalled. I was told this by someone who lived in Japan and played the game when it came out over there. It didn't help that SF3 was right around the corner as well.
Forgive my scrubby play; I can normally get through the game either not continuing until I get to Scion, or at least only use 1 or 2 continues before I get to him.
