My dad sold his truck a couple years ago with 330, 000 miles because he thought it was at its end. We still see it driving around in town. Probably close to 400k miles now.

One of my brothers has owned nothing but the 97-03 f150. I got one as a work truck..never looked back! The absolute best work truck I have ever owned as far as reliable and dependability. I just picked up a 97 f150 reg cab 4.6 5 speed Lariat .All options . Building it to be a daily/travle truck. With the prices of new vehicle, if you like these body styles, you'd be a fool to not find one and out a little money in it and have a perfect truck!

Nailed it! I've experienced all these except the head gasket, with that being said, it's the best truck I've ever owned.

I bought a new 2000 F150 XLT Supercab 5.4L 4WD. I drove it 105, 000 miles in 5 years and sold it to a friend. The right rear axle seal leaked at about 80k miles and the limited slip diff was shuddering on turns. An axle seal that cost about $8 fixed the leak and changing the diff fluid fixed the shudder. That was it in 105K miles.
Later I bought a used 2002 F150 Supercab Lariat FX4 5.4L in 2009 that had 69k miles on it. It now has 171, 000 miles on it. The right rear axle and bearing and front end (tie rod ends, ball joints, bearing hubs etc) were replaced. More recently the blend door actuator failed and I replaced the plugs for the second time along with the coils this time. The only time it failed to start was repaired with a new PCM relay that cost about $8. No leaks and it runs great. The only modification to it is a Superchips 1715 87 octane tune which perked it up considerably. No plug blowout, egr, IAC, or blend door failure on either truck. Oh yeah, the rear suicide doors were repaired because the cable ends failed on the latch mechanism. I bought aluminum cable ends for cheap and repaired them.
Most reliable vehicles I've ever owned and I've owned a bunch in my 79 years.

I bought my 1997 4.2 V6 F150 3door Flareside in June of 96. The odometer broke at 385K about10 years ago and calculated it had over 500K when I gave it to my son last year. Everything still works. Only major repair was the heater core replacement.

Ive had mine for three years i bought a 1997 f150 XLT with the 5.4 engine. I’ve put that truck through work and its been very reliable. Regular maintenance like the spark plugs, oil change etc etc. I’ve only had to change my alternator which was the stock one

2000 Built Last week of July that year bought new ONE WEEK late in Early august. No Garage. Been to all the lower 48 states with it. I Mid Atlantic RUSTY states complete with Salt. I cared for it well and many many trips to the car wash to remove winter salt. ALL Avail. Ill make a video soon.
2000 F150 XLT 4.2 5 Speed Manual 208, 000 miles.
Here is the Rust:
1. Rear rearward Spring Shackles 60% Gone
2. Rear rearward Spring Hanger 40% Gone
3. Steel Brake lines along the frame Changed 8 years in . Brakes went to the floor in a parking lot.
4. GAS TANK RUSTY STRAP HANGARS AND RUSTY GAS TANK Many complained to the GOV and FORD replaces straps only
5. Gas tank itself finally started leaking 17th year replaced with Junk Yard and now its rusted SAME place
(Ford saving a few dollars on gas tanks and brake lines WAS INEXCUSABLE)
6. Rockers BOTH SIDES GONE by the 18th year
7. Truck Bed all FOUR STEEL supports gone by year 19
8. Rust on the lower side rear of the bed about 20% each side

9. Cab Mounts about 20% Gone
10. Of course THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT 90% Gone
And That is after polishing it many times a year and living at the car wash. I suppose Since most of this is common in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic its was inevitable. But overall it keeps running!

I have owned 3 in this body style my current one has over 200k on it still going strong. My last one had 285k they are good trucks. They just require good service just like anything that you want to last. Regular tune ups front end work ect. I think people forget it’s a used truck. You are getting something that could be 23 years old. So you have to keep that in mind. I have spent money on rebuilding all the suspension parts it was not that expensive in the long one when you look what a new truck cost l. I will keep spending 1, 000 a year on it after all that’s cheaper than 1, 000 plus a car payment so yes they have issues but remember it’s a old truck so it will need work.

About 6 months ago I bought a 5.4 Lariat model from 2002 for $800. Has 280, 000 miles on it and was missing a grill. Done all the work this beast has needed with the help of my dad, it’s been fun, and it’s come a long way, and frankly, it’s been worth it. Still not done with it though, will update when I am lmao

I love my 2001 Lariat Supercrew 4x4. 5.4 just hit 225, 000 & runs very strong with good mpg. Gorgeous bright vermillion red & silver has a mirror like shine. I've done a new Ford starter & Motorcraft 850 battery, a fuel pump, heater core & blend door + installed aftermarket double din stereo cd with bluetooth. A great truck & very reliable. Had a 97 5.4 4x4 over 200k, new owner likes it, drives it every day.
