'The first year of Colorado’s “red flag” Extreme Risk Protection Order'

This Research2Practice webinar will examine the implementation of Colorado’s Extreme Risk Protection Order through the lens of researchers and legal practitioners. Leslie Barnard will discuss a study of ERPOs in 2020, including outcomes (petitions granted, identified abuse or misuse) and challenges in obtaining and analyzing data. A representative from the Colorado Attorney General’s office will present on legal considerations and experiences related to the first year of ERPO implementation and usage in Colorado.

Speakers:

Leslie Barnard, MPH is a graduate student in the DrPH program at the Colorado School of Public Health and the coordinator for the research project on ERPOs in Colorado in 2020. She received her MPH in Epidemiology from Tulane University and her BA in Biology from the University of Vermont. Leslie’s previous work as an epidemiologist in state and local health departments included various injury and violence prevention programs; specifically firearm injury, suicide and opioid overdose research, surveillance, and response.

Adam Rice, JD is Counsel to Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser. In that role, he advises the Attorney General and leads a range of special projects to further the Attorney General’s affirmative legal policy agenda. He received a J.D. from Yale Law School and a B.A. in Government from Dartmouth College. Adam began his career as an elementary school teacher in Newark

Emmy Betz, MD, MPH is an emergency physician and researcher at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where she is Deputy Director of the Injury and Violence Prevention Center and Director of the Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative. She co-founded and leads the Colorado Firearm Safety Coalition, a collaborative effort between public health and medical professionals and firearm retailers to reduce firearm suicides. She serves as PI and Co-I on multiple research projects, including current work examining ERPOs in Colorado.

This is so challenging to watch without hearing the “umm” every 20 seconds.
