When it comes to investing in stocks you basically have 3 main options.
1. Use a professional financial adviser
2. You try to pick the winning stocks & funds yourself
3. You just invest in a simple index fund.

The first 2 options are known as Active investing as you or your adviser are trying to beat the index fund known as “the market”. The 3rd option of just buying into an index fund is known as Passive investing. And this is where you are happy to bank the market returns of around 10% a year on average.

Now for the past 100 years, the stock market has been dominated by active investing with famous active investors like Warren Buffett. However, ever since the birth of passive investing and the index fund in the 1970’s, passive investing has been slowly increasing in popularity over time.

Diversify by asset class is what I suggest, have both ETFs and solid good stock picks, at least a few. There are stocks out there that are already like funds themselves like Berkshire, Prosus, etc.

I am not sure it has to be one or the other - If someone puts a large amount in S&P 500 + a moderate amount in 20-50 great companies they personally like and think will do well.

What about holding just a few secure shares? Holding Apple, Google, Facebook, Deutsche Post, Visa has performed very well in the last 10 years. Why not even choose a Nasdaq 100 ETF over an S&P 500?

In times of inflation concern like today is it best to wait for a possible correction and then invest in the index or is it irrelevant given the goal of it being long term with eventual gains?

Just one question though, what brokerage app does one use if they want to invest in American index funds if theyre from the UK.
