What a hard way to do it! When you square a binomial where one part of it is a square root, you always just end up with a binomial again because the square root term, when squared, is just an integer.

So just do this: (Throughout, R = square root of 5, so remember that R^2 = 5)

x = (1 + R) /2
Square both sides
x^2 = (1+R)^2 / 4 = (1 + 2R + 5)/4 = (6 + 2R) /4 = (3 + R) /2
Square both sides
x^4 = (9 + 6R + 5) /4 = (7 + 3R) /2
Multiply those two together
(x^2) (x^4) = x^6 = (3 + R)(7 + 3R) /4 = (24 + 16R + 15) /4 = 9 + 4R
Square both sides
(x^6)^2 = x^12 = (9 + 4R)^2 = 81 + 72R + 80 = 161 + 72R

hello, it would be possible to use an abbreviated multiplication formula at the end, namely the sum cube for (3x+2)³😊
