The particles in a solid cannot fill a container because the particles have strong forces between them so are in a fixed position and cannot move, therefore are not able to move/flow to fill the container. The particles in a liquid can fill a container because the particles have weak forces between them so are close together but can move around each other and fill the container. The particles in a liquid cannot be compressed because the particles are close together. There is no space between the particles so cannot be pushed closer. The particles in a gas can completely fill a container because the particles have negligible forces between them and have a lot of energy, so they move quickly in all directions and fill the container. The particles in a gas can be compressed because the particles are far apart. There is space between the particles to be pushed closer together.
