You are using a scythe stone. They are available synthetic or natural in several grits. Using the center portion on an axe is good because you never use that part on a scythe.

Leather doesn't really sharpen the steel. It just removed the burr and straightens up the edge so it's perfectly straight and not curled over to one side

Id use a little angle on an axe cayse its a heavy chopping tool and you dont want razor sharp but a reliable tapered edge.

This works best on a blade with a Scandinavian grind. This is one reason why I love that grind so much - the great ease at sharpening.

Hot tip: polishing more of the axe head will make it sink deeper and let you cut faster. It has a bonus for signaling.

Everything sharpens twice as fast under water, , or a little trickle of water. Professional blade sharpener.

A strop can technically "sharpen" but it is not a sharpener, it only "sharpens" by the definition because it removes the bur and polishes the edge, but if you have a dull blade a leather stop will not sharpen it

That a pretty knife. Looks old fashioned in a way.

Leather does nothing to steel! It is merely a substrate that holds either dirt and grit or a slightly abrasive compound, and the work that would take place on the edge of the steel blade is nothing more than a simple buffing action. The act of buffing or more accurately, the act of flipping the blade from side to side and applying force with motion, is what will remove the burr (sometimes referred to as the wire) by physically bending is back and forth till it breaks off. The buffing action does smooth and polish the edge causing it to be more effective due to the reduction of friction from rough and jagged surface area.

Vikings sharpened with a smooth river rock or a piece of jasper or jadeite if you can find it. No Arkansas wet stones were available.
