ORIGINAL (words in bold are incorrect): December have ‘dec’, meaning ten, but being the twelfth month is interesting actually, because I believe it DID used to be the tenth. July and August were *added later, * being named after Roman Emperors Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar, both who wanted claim to their own months in the year. This ended up shifting September (Sept = 7), October (Oct = 8), November (Nov = 9) and December (Dec = 10) two months backwards, causing the disparity between the name of the month and the actual position of the month in the year. Fascinating stuff!

CORRECTION: Apparently, this is actually wrong! I thought I remembered reading this somewhere, but I must’ve misremembered. As the replies stated, it was January and February, which were considered dead months, added later actually! But July and August *were* named after Roman Emperors (and had different names before being named after the emperors), just not added later, which I still find fun! :)
