GIS Training - What I Learned

Been a long few days of training with GIS
geographic information system
Just a fancy way of saying overlaying data on top of a map.
When you look at google maps with traffic on that is GIS.

Great free tool for hikers & hunters
Can make custom maps
Custom overlays
So you can start with a topo and then overlay satellite or open maps
Then export to a pdf which you can use out on the trails
Or export so I can use in on my Garmin Fenix Watch

Gaia GPS
integrates some great Topo tools like
offline navigation tools
planning features

Apply that to data that you might want in an emergency???

Open data sets
Homeland Infrastructure Foundation-Level Data (HIFLD)
This site provides National foundation-level geospatial data within the open public domain that can be useful to support community preparedness, resiliency, research, and more. The data is available for download as CSV, KML, Shapefile, and accessible via web services to support application development and data visualization.
