Negotiating with Iran: The U.S., the EU, and the Future of the Nuclear Deal

In early 2021, efforts to restore diplomatic relations and revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action—known in common parlance as the Iran Nuclear Deal—stalled between Iran and the U.S. And while there has been progress around the renewed nuclear talks currently taking place in Vienna, there are still challenges.

Both countries have signaled a willingness to return to the JCPOA on a "compliance for compliance" basis, and experts from the deal’s other signatories—France, Germany, the UK, Russia, China, and the EU—have been meeting and relaying messages between the U.S. and Iran. With the upcoming national election in Iran taking place on June 18, time feels of the essence for the negotiations. How will the Biden's Administration's goal to restore the nuclear deal advance U.S. national security? How will this impact allies in the region?
