Advocates concerned about new 5-day limit at Massachusetts emergency shelters

The Massachusetts governor says the new cap on stays at overflow shelters is to keep the system from collapsing. WBZ-TV's Tammy Mutasa reports.

There are too many coming into this state. We have to take care of our own citizens first.

It's concerning because as an advocate we work with these families day in and day out, if you don't know or have never been through it yourself, obviously it is going to be hard to understand. The concern is that we have been capped off with finding space and certain states are shut off because the housing crisis has been so bad. Five days is not enough time to find vouchers, jobs, other placement, etc for families. 30 days was barely enough but Massachusetts is getting to a point where if we keep going down the road we have been, it is going to fail even more horribly. I am glad that we are now a closed state and taking care of residents but for the most part, we were already doing that. I wish the government would actually do something to care for their citizens instead of creating more bs. It now doesn't just impact those families or people working with them, it now impacts the community and other people way more than before with this change. It's good that awareness is being spread because this has been a problem for YEARS. Wish it would be different than the five days but hopefully things will improve.

It's time this bubble pops and we get some proper rent prices, competitive jobs, and getting these people that have been waiting some help and processed faster. It's too expensive and there's too much fraud mixed in with people who really need it.
