Its good that many channels teach you more in 1 minute than your* entire History lesson that took 30 Minutes

Imagine being able to go back to Rome's height and just exploring the Empire. Apparently banditry was also low during this time, so you could safely wander

How ancient cultures traveled is fascinating to me. We always think of them as being static but there were many reasons for them to travel long distances including trade, military, politics, and ecclesiastical matters. I've always wondered about the daily lives of the people and institutions who made this possible.

for the Romans it was not the roads that adapted to the territory but the opposite! if a road had to pass them, any obstacle was removed! The technique to blow up the mountain ridges is incredible: only with the pressure of the water they split parts of rock! (tunnels in the mountain filled with pressurized water)! incredible engineering techniques of the Romans! 😊

For those of you who are interested in the history of the roads of Rome, the Roma Trilogy written by Steven Saylor, which recounts in a fantastic way the history of Rome from the year 1000 B.C. until the Christianization of the Empire, has a entire chapter dedicated to the creation of these roads by Appius Claudius Caecus. I highly recommend the trilogy.

I love Roman Roads and Ports. They (along with cultural and administrative ties) were the literal foundations of the Medieval World right up until modern engineering finally matched and, in some ways, outmatched them.

The Romans also perfected the self supporting arch, one of the most important and enduring structural models ever achieved. it was, ans still is, the key to building all those masterpiece cathedrals, aqueducts, gateways, and bridges. Also, the arch was used to build structures like the Colisseum and all other load bearing buildings up to five stories tall that would likely survivbetter in an earthquake.

They also invented hydraulic cement, which is still used today for patching under water leaks in the aqueducts and sewer lines. Cementum.

At it's peak, Rome had more fresh drinking water per citizen than any other city in the world until the US systems in the 1950's.

There is a saying in German "Alle Wege führen nach Rom". Translate it means, all roads lead to rome

And thus the famous expression still used nowadays in different languages "all roads lead to Rome". At one point in history it was the reality

I recently heard that they were actually not paved on their top layer except when next to cemeteries, eg the Appian Way. This allowed for smoother and faster wagon travel than would be possible on a hard bumpy surface.

What we forget is that the Roman road web infrastructure was the greatest achievement of the Roman Legions: it glued the Roman and the medieval Europe together and most of our modern road system except for the post WWII Highways was actually built in the late republican and early imperial era by the Legions in peace times

Hence the old addadge "All Roads Lead To ❤Rome❤".

Don't forget they cleared the area around the roads so that bandits can't hide near a road. And IIRC some of them had ditches to the side both to allow water drainage and to serve a final obstacle to bandits.

The Roman Empire experiment was a success, I wish the same for America in the books of history

You can still witness them functioning perfectly fine as footpaths even to this day!
