Matt Baker is joined by former F1 champion Damon Hill and Sky Sports F1 commentator Harry Benjamin as they reflect on another fascinating Grand Prix in Baku where Oscar Piastri again showed his class as his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris overcame a horror Saturday to chip away further at Max Verstappen's championship lead.

Both good drivers, but Piastri is getting better and better. His temperament is fantastic and he's only been in F1 for 18 months.

Lando has had the first use of both major upgrade packages at McLaren this year...both in Austria and Miami where he capitalised with points. But since they've been in equal equipment over the past 7-8 races Piastri has performed better.
Imagine if they both got the upgrades at the same time?

Damon Hill is right about one thing, when your chasing you got nothing to lose, you know who so far has shown himself to be the biggest big game hunter? OSCAR PIASTRI... it is zero surprise that HE IS THE ONLY DRIVER SO FAR THIS SEASON TO FINISH EVERY LAP OF EVERY RACE, his consistency is his super power.

McLaren: Oscar, let Lando overtake
Mark Webber, tied to a chair in the back of the garage: DRIVE OSCAR DRIVE

If Piastri can improve by 2 tenths of raw pace in qualifying by next year, it’s over for Lando. And at the rate Oscar is learning and improving, that’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Lando has taken many years to get to this point and now that he is here he has become a big downer, whiner etc. Oscar has taken 18 months and has that champion mentality

To suggest that, in a split second of thought, Lando should ignore a yellow flag and just go for it, is about the most ridiculous statement I've heard. Say he did that and he finished up slamming into a barely moving car - would it look so clever then? He had to respond to the yellow - the stupidity was in McLaren putting him in a position where he only had one shot at getting a time in.

Let’s not forget how Piastri and his manager Mark Webber got out of the Alpine contact and into the McLaren. He’s got a killer instinct alright! 👏🏽👏🏽

Soon as the British bias stops, McLaren can proceed with commencing back to their dominant ways. Until then, they increase their likelihood of losing a World Championship driver in Oscar Piastri as they continue to cater to Lando.

Piastri has done A LOT with very little - relative to Lando.

Oscar has already proven himself to be the No. 1 driver in the future if not for the remaining of the season

People all need to stop the "Lando has faster race pace" BS. since austria and equal machinery the race pace differential is 6/1 in Piastri's favour. apart from zanvoort where Norris was a well deserved -0.38 all other races have been -0.29 -0.07 -0.26 -0.04 -0.09 in Piastri' favour. Basically its close, actually very much a mirror to how close the qualy is in Lando's favour. Get off the Landocopium look at the facts. They are both incredibly fast drivers. One is 130 something races into his career the other 38ish - at current progression Oscar will pull away from Lando if he doesn't progress, but who knows what the ceiling is for either driver. Well done mclaren for securing their services. Mclaren do need new strategists though, they are too hesitant time after time on pit calls.

Norris overall has the speed but Piastri seems more cool, clam and measured driver

Lando fan girls and British media crying because Oscar is a better driver than Lando

Oscar is already stepping forward as the #1 at McLaren. Lando hasn't had a driver push him this hard, probably in his entire racing career. You can tell. He's making mistakes. Lando will most likely leave McLaren at the end of this contract, and go elsewhere. He'll not be the #1 after this season. Oscar is a better and cleaner driver than him.

McLaren came on strong after James Key was fired as tech director because of the lack of performance of the MCL60. He's now at Sauber. It may be coincidence, then it may not be

It was disappointing that both Karun and Harry missed the ailing Ocon with a rear left puncture in Q1 that spoiled Norris’s hot lap. It was obvious on the TV feed. Otherwise it was a good performance by the stand in commentary team, and JV is just as opinion-dividing as always and I love it!

A measured, non reactionary response (I know, hard to come by with F1 fans):

First of all, Oscar has A: been immense, and B: been better than Lando in the last 10 races. These two things are true. What is also true is A: Lando is still ahead in the championship due to how good he's been from the start of the season, and B: a run of bad form doesn't mean a driver is "washed" or that Oscar is suddenly way better than Lando.

Norris has been consistently good for 3 years now. Outclassed Daniel, then also got the better of Oscar last year and this year for the first part. 10 races at less than perfect performance doesn't *necessarily* mean that Oscar is the better driver all of a sudden. The fact is, Lando has proven himself for much longer. I think Lando should still be number 1 at McLaren, both based on his mathematical points advantage and his proven track record.

I think Oscar is something special, as a Lando fan. Tbh, yeah I think he *could* turn out to be even better than Lando. And if he continues to outclass lando for the rest of the season, he does deserve consideration for being 1st driver at Mclaren next season. But as long as Lando has a decent points advantage and is driving decently (not perfectly, but consistent at least), I think it would be absurd to say Lando isn't still the better driver with his proven track record

8.4 points on average every race weekend until the end of the season? Good luck with that. IIRC the biggest chunk Norris has ever managed to take out of Verstappen's lead was 8 points... once! Piastri, on the other hand, took 15 points off Verstappen, not once but twice!
