How Fast can a Bicycle Tire Spin Before it Fails

How fast can a bicycle wheel spin? How fast do you think it will go before it breaks apart? The physics and G-forces of the wheel are going to me extreme! I love getting ideas for new videos from my viewers, so please leave a comment!

This video would not be possible with out Justin, his skills, knowledge and material! Please go check out his channel!

There's only one solution to every problem. More Power!

Nice. I’m definitely in for seeing it go above 432mph

Holy moly, that rim only test is really really dangerous.

You need remote control of the motor. You should also have some kind of blast shield (similar to the Mythbusters). Ever seen their video of what a tire flying off a big-rig does? It is a lot heavier, but your speed is higher. Also, 400+ mph is getting into the range where if the metal did fail, it could puncture you like grenade fragments. Probably won't die, but it will do some damage.
Remember also that doubling the speed multiplies the force (and damage it can do) by 4x. 10x speed is 100x damage, etc (squared relationship). Protect yourselves.

What failed the good wheel was you deleting the derailleur system. Put it back on so it can guide and tension the chain. The chain only came off because of that. And you might drill some holes in the base to peg it down for stability. Those spokes made a lot of wind noise at the higher speed without the tyre- maybe you could get some carbon fibre spoke covers or a full disc wheel to test to destruction? Use a small car motor so you can keep gearing it up until a good tyre explodes.

Awesome video Chris, that was pretty epic. Congrats on the new addition to the family. She is precious.

Dude, I love what your doing on your channel. Great slow motion on the GP. Keep up the good work.

I would love to see it spin fast enough to break the rim

I would add a draw string cut off to the engine system. This way you won’t have to get into the danger zone when shutting off the engine.

Despite the spokes being pretty thin and the rim being made of aluminium these wheels can bear quite heavy loads.
When I am on longer trips I typically have 22kg of baggage with me plus several liters of water and also some food. My bike weighs 17kg, and myself more than 90. So the total weight is about 140kg of which maybe 20kg rest on the front wheel.

Change the gear ratio to an easier gear, as spinning a bicycle wheel REALLY fast could use more power than you think as the wind resistance power cubes with speed. Even if it only takes say 50 watts to spin at 1000 rpm, then 2000 rpm needs 400 watts and 4000 rpm 3200 watts etc.

I actually have 2 questions.
1. Are the spokes in equal standard tension?
2. Why is the tyre not inflated? Because it can affect its stability and gripping power onto the rim.

I suppose these two are affecting the limit of the spinning speed of the wheel, right?

Hey, thanks for dispelling a lot of misconceptions! That explains how dragsters with motorcycle tires work at all!,

Chris, Chris, I love ya man! Good stuff. Used to do this kind of stuff when I was young. “Wonder what would happen if we did this”. Great video. Loved it

I'd be curious to see how long the engine is going to run after being blasted on its side while running without oil circulation!

That's cool, I'm doing some inventing and needed this research.

Hi Chris, I was a bit late with watching this episode but once again it's great. Try putting a piece of paper to it (what we did when we were kids), or blow some air at the spinning spokes.. what sound would it make lol. But mind your safety! Greetings from The Netherlands.
