A gameplay experience that's super fun, that's made by devs that (seem to) give a shit if the players are HAVING FUN, and for NOT $70. All this while the game contains a MTX system that is extremely fair in it's pricing structure and lets you find the premium currency IN-GAME, and also has permanent battle-passes so there's no FOMO. Bugs and stability aside, this is a 10/10 game. There's a reason trash like Suicide Squad has less than 0.5% of the current players of HD2.

My youngest loves playing Fortnite splitscreen with me. She will invite friends over to play Fortnite together on a single screen. There is something familiar and warming about sharing a couch and a tv while playing a co-op game together. We are losing that in the online multiplayer era. We may be playing a game together, but the "hangout vibe is missing". HOWEVER, without the magic of online multiplayer in real time, I'd never be able to play with friends that I may never meet in person. it's a double edged sword.

I love Helldivers 2 - and strangely enough, so does my wife.

We used to game together all the time (we met in an MMO), but lately, every game we tried to play together, we just couldn't get into it.

Cue Helldivers 2. I got it first, and she laughed her ass off at the intro. She saw me playing and having a ton of fun, and she finally agreed to give it a shot. Her and i now play it all the time, and she even has Dragons Dogma 2, which is a game we both have wanted forever! She plays Helldivers 2 over an RPG game, which blows my mind since she loves RPG games.

We play co-op now, keeping each other alive. She let me upgrade my video card for my computer so i can, in turn, upgrade my son's computer - all so he can join us too.

This game quite literally has brought my family closer together, and this is amazing!

So what does anything in this video have to do with why developers? You just go on for nearly 5 minutes about how gaming use to be it was hard to even keep track of that because I skipped around some trying to find something that resembled a point. Don't get me wrong I don't disagree with anything you really said but your title has nothing to do with anything you said really but you didn't say anything new or informative.

You are way too underrated for your quality of content, the visuals, commentary, expression, and background music are just phenomenal!

Not at all the reason the devs hate the game, they hate it because unlike all the woke garbage this game gives players what they actaully want. And that makes money and goes against the crap they put out. Now we the players have an escape from the freaks and weirdos messages and they cant stand that.

man that title is very clickbaity, I'm a Game Dev, obviously not hating Helldivers, I'm actually loving it. What I think you mean is big, especially Multiplayer focused, Studios not innovating, which I can relate to, but there are lots of great Games that can create the same feeling you describe. You should take a look at Deep Rock Galactic, Earth Defense Force and similar games. There are lots of options out there, that give great Mutliplayer experiences, maybe even coming close to the couch coop feeling.

I'd actually argue the last couple of years produced some of the best Multiplayer games out there right now, just most of them aren't from big studios, which I feel is the point you want to make. Triple-A Studios basically lost their ability to innovate, which is mostly due to the huge risks that could be caused by innovating too much in that space. Doing something new obviously comes with the risk of turning people away from your game. Smaller Studios are able to take these kinds of risks a little better, because a niche may still sustain them. Triple-A games on the other hand will literally fail catastrophically if they don't sell millions of copies, because they are so expensive to make these days, so those companies will usually play it save. That obviously sucks, which is why I personally think triple-A isn't really good for the industry, but it gives way for smaller Studios and surprise hits like Helldivers.

From a developers perspective it's very hard to really get the experience just right and even harder to actually reach the right audience to pick up momentum once you've released your game. But we see quite a big push for more Coop focused games, which will inspire more studios to try that out for themselfs. Multiplayer comes with many challenges, some of which are just really expensive to solve (i.e. infrastructure) and it takes lots of experience to get it right on a large scale, we've seen that when Helldivers released, so many smaller studios just don't have the capabilities. It is getting much better and easier these days, so this might shift more and more.

Also I would disagree that couch coop is dead. It got much more rare, that's for sure, but there are still many great options out there, especially for consoles of course. Again from a game devs perspective, online multiplayer just makes way more sense to develop, because the audience is so big. So rather then implementing 2 different multiplayer modes, that have completely different logic behind them and therefore need to be developed separately, which costs quite a lot of time, effort and therefore money, online mode usually gets prioritized. Players expect that from a modern game, so that gets implemented first. Split screen, especially on more demanding games is just harder to pull off, because you'd usually develop them for consoles, which have limited resources, but now you have to render 2-4 times as much stuff, because each player moves separately. Optimizing for that kind of load is really hard, so you see that more for games, that either aren't quite as demanding, so they have more headroom in terms of performance, or on games that have a big history of split screen, because players expect that from the devs, but it is really expensive to pull off and the audience is sadly much smaller, so it doesn't make a ton of sense. But there are still a few games out there, that are specifically tailored for that kind of gameplay and they do a great job at it, stuff like "It Takes Two" comes to mind. Also you might wanna try "Boomerang Fu", very small Indie game, couch versus only with up to 6 players, it's brilliant fun, you need at least 3 players though for it to shine.

Put some respect on Black Ops 3’s name. That game was the last hoorah for a decent call of duty experience.
