I was unaware of so many things in such a short period of time. I feel like if you were to ask 100 random Americans what they know about Scottish History; about 90% of them would say "Freeeeeeeeedom!!!!!" or "William Wallce" (Insert Scottish accent attempt by American" 🤣

I work as a Genealogist and a lot of my customers are in Australia. I've recently completed a 'tree' for one customer who's ancestors came from the Highland Clearances. So yes, the narrator is right, it was mostly the Scottish Lords and Ladies that turned out the 'Crofters' (Farm workers) and made them destitute or dead, in fact this event has been classed as one of the first ethnic cleansing.
The Crofters had lived and farmed in the Highlands for generations, the land had always been hard for crop growing because of it being so far North and after the potato famine it just got worse. The Crofters rented the land from the Scottish Gentry and they didn't need them if sheep grazed there instead. My customers ancestors were one of the lucky families as their landlord was Lady Dunmore and she paid for the Mother her 5 children and a Nephew to sail to Australia, she even found them jobs in service to go to when they got there. Lady Dunmore was sarcastically known as 'Mother of the Crofters' by the other Landlords as she helped as many other families as she could.
Side note:- After the War of Independence with America Britain had to find another country to send people to hence Australia, Australia was actually crying out for people and welcomed the Scottish as they were known as resilient and hard workers. My customer said that their Australian Grandfather bred Highland Cattle but they never knew why he chose this breed, now they do.

I’m English, but I have ancestors who were affected by the highland clearances. The story goes that they walked from Scotland to England, and eventually ended up over 300 miles away in the West Midlands in England; which tracks because my other more recent ancestors are from that general area of England, and genetically I’m about 1/4 Scottish.

The Clearances actually went on FAR FAR longer than this video would have you believe. It continued LONG into the 20th Century. And to say this was not entirely down to the English, is, I'm afraid, a flat out LIE. The landowners may not have all been English but they ALL received these lands for swearing loyalty to the English crown and were paid handsomely to do so. One final point, NOTHING ABOUT THIS WAS FUNNY and you laughing all the way through the story of the theft and devastation of my Nation was HIGHLY OFFENSIVE. Have some respect.
