In Genesis 3, right as soon as humanity breaks everything, right after everything plunges into darkness, God graciously gives hope. A light. A promise. Someone is going to come that will crush the deceiver's head. This serpent crusher is going to come through the line of the woman (not the man as it is usually reckoned) and He will be wounded in the process of destroying the deceiver (Genesis 3:15).
Over the years, this picture of a Savior gets sharper and sharper. In Isaiah 7, we are told a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son who will be called "God with us." And right after that He's referred to as a light for those who are far from God. Those living in the dark (Isaiah 9).
Then, John's Gospel heralds this Savior as the True Light that shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overpower Him (John 1). Later in His life, Jesus would say "I am the Light of the world."
This season of celebrating the Light's victory over darkness can give anyone hope. No matter what you're going through, what darkness you're facing... everything can be okay with Jesus. Because you'll always have a light in the darkness.
