In this episode we have another installment close to Da Nang, Hoi An. We will take a short day trip to check out Hoi An, Vietnam. If we like what we see we will return soon to check it out in more detail. In this episode we take a motorbike from Da Nang to Hoi An to see if it is worth coming back to soon to get a real feel for life as a RIPper there. We are having a great time in a different SE Asian country than Thailand and we are really starting to appreciate Vietnam and its people.

In part 12 I will give you some averaged costs to expect in Da Nang and Hoi An and we will continue to cover what it is like to live in Vietnam and in this episode we have some info and sights and sounds again from Da Nang. We will continue to contemplate the question, “what would life be like living in Vietnam as a retiree?” We will continue to see what the upsides and downsides are to living in a Communist country like Vietnam.

Hội An is a city on Vietnam’s central coast known for its well-preserved Ancient Town, cut through with canals. The former port city’s melting-pot history is reflected in its architecture, a mix of eras and styles from wooden Chinese shophouses and temples to colorful French colonial buildings, ornate Vietnamese tube houses and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge with its pagoda.

Wow J.C. that was probably your best video yet! Great great shots on the bike! I love the fact that you put the prices of everything also. Keep up the good work.

Hi JC. Thanks for the video. It rekindled memories of when I toured many parts of southern and central Vietnam. Yes.. I agree, the hawlkers are a huge pain.Regarding Marble mountain. In the past marble was quarried from there but to preserve it as more of a religious site, the majority of the marble is now brought in from China. The walk up to the top of Marble mountain is worth the few dollars and gives you a lovely view ( if you have the stamina to go right to the top) . Just be warned, there are individuals even on the mountain trying to force themselves on you as tour guides. As well, when we came down another path from the mountain a yappy little dog came out of a house and proceeded to bark and nip at us...I was about to dispatch the little mongrel with my boot when a woman of about 60 came out to rescue us from her and then proceeded to try to hit us up for money for saving us...omg ! Quite the little scam she has going Sic the dog on tourists and then demand money for calling off her dog.Long story short we didn't pay and kept walking while she hurled threats at us.

My first car a 61 Impala only had a left side mirror and center rear view The right side was a option back then.

Visited Nha Trang in late 1988. Hoi An and Da Lat in 1992. Bumpy dirt roads. Slow trains. The beach front in Nha Trang almost empty with tourists. In sun rise and and sun dawn packed with locals tripping down the local streets bar footed. Low rise buildings in French Colonial style. Today it's transformed into Pattaya architecture. A very busy High Way and Sky Scrapes in beach fronts instead of doing the opposite placing them further back. Imo the place is more or less ruined. But mass tourism seems to enjoy it. With Hoi An they've done a better job.

Hoi An is best experienced after nightfall. A magical place despite the tourists. I really enjoyed my time there. There is a large fresh food market by the riverside for resident shoppers. Cheers 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

nice video.  How did you record the video when both of your arms are on the handle bar and the video angle keeps changing?

That's not really why JC, it's easier to navigate through traffic with only one mirror. So most people remove the right one.

The beach in Da Nang reminds me of Florida in the forties. How old can you be when moving to Thailand?:)

Great video! Wasn't quite clear. Is that all Hoi an or just old town? If just part, like how much bigger is the whole city? Thnxs in advance.

There's something about Vietnam that doesn't have the appeal of Thailand, although I haven't been to the former, although I have to say Hoi An is stunningly beautiful.

Vietnam seems quite a bit more expensive than Thailand. I'm basing that comment on prices in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

JC, was the motorbike you were on outside the restaurant a Yamaha Exciter 150?

Another interesting video.
