Intro to political revolutions
Era 7 -- 1775 - 1914
Era 7 was a wild time of change.
Major Inventions changed travel and communication:
• Railway locomotive
• Steamship
• Telegraph
• Telephone
People moved (by choice or force):
• African slaves to the Americas
• European migrants to colonies
• Asian migrants to Southeast Asia and Americas
World population grew more than ever...
• Everyone everywhere experimented with new ways of organizing their lives
• These changes were confusing.
To help make sense, we're looking at:
• Democratic and political revolutions around the Atlantic Ocean
• The Industrial Revolution
• How Europe came to dominate most of the world
Political Revolutions and New Ideas
• American Revolution -- 1776
• French Revolution -- 1789
• Revolution in Haiti -- 1791
• Revolution in Venezuela -- 1811
Important new ideas people started to embrace:
• Popular sovereignty
• Inalienable rights
• Nationalism
Popular sovereignty
• Popular -- of the public or people
• Sovereignty -- supreme power
• Popular + Sovereignty = People have the power
Inalienable Rights
• Inalienable -- NOT alienable
• Alienable -- able to be sold or given away
• Inalienable Rights = Rights that cannot be taken away, rights everyone has
Nationalism
• Devotion to your country
• Before the mid 1700s people were usually devoted to a city or ruler
• Writers, Intellectuals, flags, national currencies, patriotic songs and even characters encouraged people to take pride in their country.
What happens when you combine all of these?
• People who believe they should have a part in the government?
• People who believe they have rights the government can't deny?
• People who are proud of their country, but might not care about the King?
• You get people ready to start a revolution and change the government to match their ideas.
