The Battle of Liège was the first major engagement of World War I, fought between August 5 and 16, 1914, as part of the German invasion of Belgium.

The German Army aimed to quickly capture the fortified city of Liège to secure a route into France.

Despite their determined resistance and well-defended forts, the Belgian forces were eventually overcome by the Germans, who used heavy artillery, including the powerful Big Bertha howitzers, to breach the fortifications.

The fall of Liège delayed the German advance and provided a boost to Allied morale.
