From concept “crab driving” to autonomous vehicles - the latest technology in the car industry was on show at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

With concerns about safety and different laws from governments - how much of the technology will actually make it on the road?

This video is from BBC Click, the BBC’s flagship technology programme.

I think driverless cars should be banned.

I'm in one now and can't get out! It says it's heading to London UK but I live in California and we're barely into Utah!

Driverless cars need to have a standard system used by all of them, including communication between them on the road and with a central system for coordination. The current approach is interesting but ultimately inefficient and will never be as safe as a communal approach.

There is no driverless car in my future. I will never own one.

Congratulations to those who can afford this car

When they evolve to the point they can drive me home from a bar---LEGALLY----even if I'm passed out drunk, then I'm in. Until then all this "advanced driver assistance tech" just gets in my dam way. I turn all that isht off.

Driverless cars? STUPID IDEA! Show me just ONE car component that has never failed? Just one, yet we are expected to trust in a system comprising hundreds of components.

We don’t need passenger vehicles at this scale. A Tesla battery is large enough to power over 100 e-bikes. Battery materials are hard to mine ethically, we have to scale our consumption to do so. We can’t afford to have all that battery power hoarded by the few who can afford electric cars.

U.S. pedestrian deaths reach a 40-year high in 2023. Data shows that distracted driving is a real problem because of mobile phones so automakers take it up a notch with be a DJ behind the wheel. WTF we must let the robots drive because the in car experience is too much for our short attention spans.

drove a truck with sensors on the front that had some control-
the road must be perfect
no construction
no fog or rain or freezing rain or snow
no potholes no low bridges
then it might work

In a future dominated by self-driving cars, it seems impractical to permit human drivers given their demonstrated slower reaction times and calculation abilities compared to AI. Legislation, designed to ensure safety, could logically restrict human driving except for specific contexts like racing, tracks, and vintage driving sports.

The sonification of converting data to sound is not a new concept, but very interesting how they made music from it in this instance.

Driverless cars where they are work together, cars be like trams where they stay in their lane and communicate with other cars. When this all happens i think cars controlled by drivers will be illegal

The commercials are longer than the video. 🤦🏻‍♀️

3:39 What if there is a car in the lane the #AutonomousVehicle swerves into? And what if THAT vehicle is ALSO an autonomous? 🤔🧐🤨 They SAY it won't swerve if it senses other objects in the escape path; what they DON'T say is what it *WILL* do... 🤷‍♀️

"driverless" ? It is by definition careless driving.
Someone should always be the designated driver
who is legally responsible for the vehicle
and always ready to take control of the vehicle.

Yeah, well, the killer of batteries is the cold and electric cars in Canada, in the winter, are a non-starter... pun intended. And, oh yes, the sensor problems still seem to be a bit of a hit and miss... another pun intended !

It won’t be long before a Country + Western song is written about the car that left him?

A friend of mine, when he started his apprenticeship, was sent to the store for "2 long weights (waits as it happened)".
Without watching the video, I think we will have plenty of very long waits.
