Video 34 What is an Oracle instance? - Database Tutorial 34

Let us just say that you click that NOTEPAD icon in your PC. What does it do? It opens a process in the memory for NOTEPAD. That is it. Did it open a file? No. It did not open a file because we did not tell it to open a file. So this is just an empty memory process running in the RAM of the computer.

Let me call this as an instance. So we have an instance of Notepad running.

Oracle also functions in the same way. During the startup, it starts up an instance first. This contains a bunch of memory processes. The configuration of those are determined by the parameter file.
