Hi Nathan. Cool that you finished the Bergman set! Bergman is one of my very favorite filmmakers and artists. I watched all the films in curated order back in 2019 over the course of a few months and really enjoyed the journey. I find the films poetic, emotional, spiritual, dramatic, even funny (surprisingly at times and for some films). My entry into his work was the faith trilogy after watching Wild Strawberries and Seventh Seal many years ago. So many favorites but I have high regard for Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Summer with Monika, and more. I love the extra features on this set too, so much to learn and study. My favorite Bergman film is Fanny and Alexander (full length TV version) which, in my humble opinion, brings together his work and vision in such a magical, dramatic, and unique way. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Bergman and this set. Hope you are doing well.

Congrats on completing the set! That's an accomplishment. And it sounds like it was very rewarding. I've seen Wild Strawberries, but that was back in high school. I need to rewatch it as an adult and explore more of his work.

Great video, Nathan! Really impressed that you made it through this set; five years or otherwise.

I've been wanting to pick this set up for a while, but have always been a little intimidated by how much there actually is to go through. Even at full price it's an incredible deal, so I'm sure I'll get it eventually (maybe even this year).

Take care!

Great vid and thanks for sharing your story here. Some great films in that collection. Just liked and subscribed!

I've done some Criterion unboxings on my channel, but not this particular collection yet.

Congratulations Nathan on completing your journey through Bergman’s movies. You really expressed what a heartfelt and intense experience it was for you. It made me envious as I can never have that experience again as I saw almost all his movies in first run theaters and repertory theaters long ago.
I think you made some great choices for your top 25. The one Bergman you didn’t mention was The Magician which I find myself returning to more than his others. Probably because it is (mostly ) a comedy and it lacks some of the potent pain that can make re-watches of others feel too depressing. Wild Strawberries is a great choice at #1!

I’ve been waiting for the Criterion sale to pick up two box sets. Now I’m thinking about throwing in another $25 and finally getting Bergman’s Cinema.

Nice work on the collection! I'm UK based and have been picking up the BFI box sets, with a lot of Bergman's output.

I love cinema, international, arthouse, and Bergman has been wonderful to explore. However, I feel like sometimes his films don't 'click' with me, I've only seen The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, once, and whilst I thought both films were good, they didn't have a lasting impact on me in the way I'd hoped. However, Persona is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. Exceptional performances, blocking, editing, direction, cinematography and conception. I'm really hoping that the more I work though the sets, the more I appreciate Bergman's style.

Well, let me congratulate you for getting through this box set! I must admit that I failed miserably because, for one thing, I'm very disorganized. And for another, I allow myself to get distracted and start going off in other directions. But I have watched a few of these films. Cries and Whispers was fascinating, but so incredibly depressing. I love Through a Glass Darkly, Persona, Wild Strawberries, Summer With Monika, The Seventh Seal, Scenes From a Marriage, Autumn Sonata, and Hour of the Wolf. But my favorite is Winter Light.

Cries and Whispers deserves better position! I love it! And Persona is my number 1. I would like a box set of Fassbinder including films that has not been released by Criterion.

Great accomplishment Nathan! You have inspired me to finish the Fellini boxset but that should be a breeze compared to this one. For some reason I just can’t connect with Bergman and his films(rather unfortunate but I tried many times) but out of the 5 that I have seen Wild Strawberries was number 1. It’s very reflective film and one that many people can connect with. Thanks for your insights. All the best! FV

Well that was seriously INTENSE! 😁 haha. Congratulations on completing the full set, and thank you so much for posting this video and talking us through your experience. Really enjoyed listening to you, especially the reasons why you feel Wild Strawberries is your number one, and the connection you have with it 👍 Good stuff.
Next Fellini or Varda set? 🤔

So now that you've seen the whole set, which viewing order would you recommend for maximum enjoyment: 1) Curated, 2) Chronological, or 3) Other/Random?
