Kolkata rape and murder case: What the Supreme Court said

On August 18th, the Supreme Court of India took suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata amid intensifying protests over the incident. This move by the top court follows the Calcutta High Court's August 13 order, which transferred the investigation from the Kolkata police to the CBI. So far, a civic volunteer linked to the Kolkata police has been arrested in connection with the case.

At the very outset of the proceedings, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud asserted that the court's decision to take suo moto cognisance was not only motivated by the severity of the murder at the Kolkata hospital but also by broader systemic issues concerning the safety of doctors throughout the country. He also expressed disappointment over the publication of the victim's name and photographs by the media, which contravenes existing legal prohibitions.
