Just factor out the common 2^18. That is multiplied by (2-1), or just 1. So 2^18.

Anyone who is intimately familiar with powers of 2 should realize that 2^n + 2^n = 2^(n+1) (and also = 2 * 2^n), and therefore 2^(n+1) - 2^n = 2^n. Just saying.

5:54: Holy algebra, Batman! He's using the ILFO method instead of the FOIL method!

I'm also wondering where the bonus problem is.

I did it in my head in about 11 seconds. You needed 8:07 minutes. Basically what I'm saying: I won!

For any one who studied computer science and knows binary number systems, is screaming their head off at 2^18. That equals 2^10*2^8. Which equals 1024*256. = 262, 144

Can you? depends on what sort of answer is required. If 2^18 would suffice, fine. But if the teacher wants a full decimal, there's no point in not using a calculator. While we all know that 2^16=65536 (we do know... we really do... do we?), multiplying it further with pen and paper just makes no sense.

Solve it without a calculator? I can solve it without a pencil: 262144.
