This is actually huge for preservation. Apple are freaking hard mode when it comes to garden wall design. They basically prefer to burn down everything behind them than let a consumer appreciate their history

I hope they implement motion emulation, this would be very nice to run classic iOS games on Steamdeck.

Not just is the old hardware a good stepping stone, the iPod 2g also actually used off-the-shelf arm processor (Samsung S5L8720) with PowerVR MBX Lite GPU. This means there shouldn't be any major undocumented or poorly documented behaviour as is more likely with fully Apple chips.

EDIT: Corrected the GPU from: PowerVR SGX535 (which i got from wikipedia, and is wrong, to PowerVR MBX Lite which should be correct)

I also had a second gen iPod Touch, still have it. Remember how crazy durable it was too, I dropped it like 100 times without a case and it never broke

when i worked for apple, we had a handful of something like this but they were just for demo purposes. so we could guide people over the phone on where to go to find a specific setting if you werent too sure of where to find it yourself.. i forgot how many we had but there was at least a handful of them across different IOS versions cause some people would call in on a very outdated version and sometimes things change.. lol

Like you said, there's been quite a few but they all got sued out of existence, and most commercial uses for emulating old hardware has moved towards virtual machines specialised for certain clients - and apple have attacked those, too.

IIRC this emulator’s been in development for a while, this is from the same guy who made the first gen touch emulator. I remember seeing progress on this when I tried to setup the then-complete first gen touch emulator a few months back.

It's great to see preservation of hardware like this. As a little fun fact iPod touches are extremely cheap. I got a 4th gen iPod for under 10$ and they should all be easily jailbroken so you can re experience the days of old. They're fun little devices to use, especially just for listening to music, with some decent battery life.

This is honestly really cool! It’s gonna be amazing to see what old iPhones were like back in the day!

These videos on the Bytes channel are absolutely killing it. Only thing missing for me is the background music

As an iPod collector and a preservationist, IT'S ABOUT TIME.

it would be pretty fun to download some games that were delisted due to the 32 bit restriction

That brought back some memories. My 2nd iPod was the 2nd gen iPod touch that I bought with some birthday money when I was 13. Man I haven't seen those icons in forever. I remember when I learned about jailbreaking, I would install all sorts of custom apps and tweaks.

Pretty good job on pronouncing that Dutch name :). Pro tip: add a little more pause between 'de' and 'vos'. Or just call him "the fox" because that's literally what "de Vos' means x)

This is nice. I got a iPod Touch 3G for Christmas in 2009 and I still use it to this day.
