‘At the moment’: Fabrizio Romano offers Chelsea fans update on potential Josko Gvardiol transfer

Fabrizio Romano has claimed to CaughtOffside that Chelsea remain interested in the potential of signing Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.

The Blues made a late effort to sign the Croatian in the summer transfer window, despite already adding multiple defenders to their ranks.

Todd Boehly completed the transfers of Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana. However, there was a need to replace a number of first team stars who departed this summer.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left the club, while there was a lot of belief that captain Cesar Azpilicueta would move on too.

Their efforts to sign Gvardiol fell short in the summer, however Romano has claimed that they are still firmly in the race to bring him in during a future window.

He said: “Chelsea are interested and have been since last summer. They wanted him for 2023 in an €80m deal plus add-ons but Leipzig refused.

“At the moment I’m told Chelsea remain interested but there’s still nothing agreed; the race is open, nothing will happen now as he’s 100% focused on World Cup.”

Gvardiol is preparing to represent Croatia at this winter’s World Cup, with his nation likely to be fighting for the top spot in their group with Belgium.

He will be competing alongside Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic, who is hoping a few days off matches will allow him to feature at 100% fitness during the tournament.

With Thiago Silva finally showing signs of his age catching up with him, the Blues could certainly do with the addition of a young defender who has already shown he has the ability to compete at the top.

The 20-year-old has already been nominated for the Kopa trophy, and has shown in both the Bundesliga and Champions League that he has the capabilities to be a real star.
